Meeting Management Practices Help Improve Productivity

Meeting Management Practices Help Improve ProductivityMeeting Management Practices Help Improve ProductivityWe spend a lot of our work lives in meetings. In many instances, poor meeting management practices result in the unproductive use of the participants time. In a related article, we offer guidance on turning five common meeting scenarios into productive events. Here are additional ideas to support strengthening the utility, productivity, and impact of meetings. Meeting Management Key - Stand PAT Some managers employ a P.A.T. approach to meetings, requiring a Purpose, an Agenda, and a Timeframe. Arming the participants with these critical points of context ahead of the session ensures that people show up prepared to participate and support the overall intent of the meeting. A clear P.A.T. outline helps ensure a productive session. You should be able to define the purpose of the meeting in 1 or 2 sentences at most. This meeting is to plan the new marketing campaign or this me eting is to review shippings new policy for handling returns. The purpose helps ensure everyone knows why they are there, what needs to be done, and how to guide progredienz and drive for a conclusion. Set an agenda. List the items you are going to review/discuss/inspect. We like to assign a time limit to each agenda item (see below) and identify the person who isresponsible for moderating the discussion. Set a timeframe at the very least set a start and end time. We also recommend setting a duration for each item on the agenda. These should total to the overall meeting timeframe. Start Your Meetings on Time If you work in one of those cultures where people trickle into meetings all the way up until five or ten minutes after the scheduled start time, it is time to start a new trend. One firm encourages its managers to close the door at the scheduled start time, and those who are late are bedrngnis welcome to attend. While this may be more draconian than you care to act, you shou ld have no qualms about bringing the meeting to order, reviewing the purpose and confirming expectations and timing. Do not wait for stragglers to show up. When someone arrives late, dont go back and review what has already been covered. Continue with your meeting topics. This will be awkward for the straggler and improve the odds of him/her arriving on time at the next meeting. If the meeting organizer/sponsor doesnt show up on time, consider the meeting canceled and go back to work. A five to seven minute waiting period is reasonable. Odds are, the meeting organizer ran into an unexpected difficulty and would prefer you not to waste your time waiting for him/her. Keep the Meeting on Topic A good practice is to assign someone the role of keeping everyone on track during the meeting. Too often, discussions drift and then degrade to a swirl of opinions, ideas, facts, and emotions. Instead, assign the role and inform everyone in attendance that this individual will interject if an d when the discussion veers off of the agenda and specific item of discussion. In some firms, this role is referenced as the Traffic Cope, in others, Topic Keeper. Regardless of the label, the role is extremely helpful in strengthening the effectiveness and productivity of your meetings. If additional topics arise that are off-agenda but important to discuss, those should be clearly captured and placed in the parking lot for future consideration and discussion or for a discrete meeting. The meeting owner reserves the right to allow a minor divergent discussion if it supports the overall meeting purpose. Keep and Distribute Meeting Notes/Minutes Someone, other than the meeting organizer, should keep minutes of the meeting. A good recording of the minutes will include Meeting time, date, locationDescription of the purposeCopy of the agendaList of attendees and a list of those who did not attendA detailed summary listing of conclusions, action items, responsibilities and dates for completion. Many notetakers use the agenda as a guide for listing the conclusions and actions.Planned follow-up meeting if truly needed. Ideally, distribute the meeting notes as soon as possible after the conclusion of the meeting and absolutely within one business day. The minutes and notes serve as an important reminder for participants as well as an information source for other stakeholders or, for those who missed the meeting. The minutes are a great tool to leverage to remind people and teams of their committed follow-up actions. The Bottom Line It is possible that a meeting will result in a positive outcome, helping to propel projects and people forward, just dont count on it. Some diligence and deliberate strengthening of your meeting management techniques will improve your chances of driving a great outcome. Updated by Art Petty

How to Conduct a SWOT Analysis

How to Conduct a SWOT AnalysisHow to Conduct a SWOT AnalysisPublished 7/11/2015 SWOT stands for Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Strengths A SWOT analysis is used to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats relative to your company, unit or group, or a product, service or program you are responsible for. The SWOT analysis lets you focus on specific areas and discover actions that can help build on strengths, minimize or eliminate weaknesses, maximize opportunities, and deal with or overcome threats. A SWOT analysis is often conducted with a kollektiv and used to inform a strategy or strategic plan and (included as part of the appendix or supporting documentation). Teams will often start with a session on creating a shared vision, then follow-up with a SWOT analyses. See How to Align Your Team Around a Shared Vision. How to Conduct a SWOT Analysis 1. Select an individual to facilitate the SWOT analysis. While a manager, team or project leader can lead their own SWOT analysis, it is often helpful to use an independent facilitator in order to free up the leader to fully participate and not bias the input from others. 2. Brainstorm a company or units strengthsGo around the room and solicit ideas from participants. Areas of strength for a company or unit include leadership abilities, decision-making abilities, innovation, productivity, quality, service, efficiency, technological processes, and so forth. Record all suggestions on a flip chart. Avoid duplicate entries. Make it clear that some issues may appear on more than one list. For example, a company or unit may have a strength in an area such as customer service, but may have a weakness or deficiency in that area as well. At this point, the goal is to capture as many ideas on the flip charts as possible. Evaluating the strengths will take place later. See 15 Ways to Rain on a Brainstorming Session for tips on what to avoid when brainstorming. 3. Consolidate ideasPost all flip charts pages on a wall. While every effort may have been taken to avoid duplicate entries, there will be some ideas that overlap. Consolidate duplicate points by asking the group which items can be combined under the same subject. Resist the temptation to over-consolidate- lumping lots of ideas under one subject. Often, this results in a lack of focus.4. Clarify ideasGo down the consolidated list item by item and clarify any items that participants have questions about. Its helpful to reiterate the meaning of each item before discussing it. Stick to defining strengths. Restrain the team from talking about solutions at this point in the process.5. Identify the top three strengthsSometimes the top three strengths are obvious and no vote is necessary. In that case, simply test for consensus. Otherwise, give participants a few minutes to pick their top issues individually. Allow each team member to cast three to five votes (three if the list of issues is ten items or fewer, five if it is long). I dentify the top three items. If there are ties or the first vote is inconclusive, discuss the highly rated items from the first vote and vote again. 6. Summarize strengthsOnce the top three strengths are decided, summarize them on a single flip chart page.7. Repeat Steps 2-6 for weaknessesSimilar to strengths, areas of weakness for a company or unit include leadership abilities, decision-making abilities, innovation, productivity, quality, service, efficiency, technological processes, and so forth.8. Repeat Steps 2-6 for opportunitiesAreas of opportunities include emerging markets, further market penetration, new technologies, new products or services, geographic expansion, cost reduction, and so forth. 9. Repeat Steps 2-6 for threatsAreas of threat include entrance of a new competitor, legislation or regulations that will increase costs or eliminate a product, a declining product or market, and so forth. Conducting a SWOT analysis is a great way to develop a picture for where you a re and where you need to go. Following these steps gives you a process for efficiently getting results in a way that involves and energizes a team.

How to Conduct a Long-Distance Job Search

How to Conduct a Long-Distance Job SearchHow to Conduct a Long-Distance Job SearchConducting a long-distance job search and attracting the attention of employers outside your home area can be a challenging task. Many employers view local candidates as safer prospects than those who would need to relocate. In addition, working with long distance candidates involves mora scheduling and can complicate the hiring process for the company. Employers also save on relocation costs and interview travel costs by hiring from their local area. Tips for Conducting a Long-Distance Job Search That Works What can you do to improve your chances when competing for out of town jobs? The key is to indicate that you are planning to relocate to that area and that youre flexible - both for interviewing and for starting work if you are hired. Focus Your Job Search Finding jobs to apply for in the new location is the easiest part of long-distance job searching. You can specify a location in the advan ced search options of all the leading job boards and job search engines. You can also utilize local resources like the Chamber of Commerce, and the help wanted ads in the local newspaper. Both typically have online job postings for available local positions. If you need more help, hereshow to find local job listings, andhow to find a job in a new city. If there are employers in the new location youd love to work for, check job listings and apply for open positions directly on the companys website. Explain in Your Cover Letters You can make it clear in your cover letters that youre planning to relocate to the city where the job is located. Mentioning a reason for moving to the area, such as wanting to be nearer to elderly parents or to join a partner, can be an effective strategy. Designate a Specific Location in Your Resume Your resume is another vehicle for conveying your plans to live in the area where a job is being offered. Some job databases allow registrants to designate a desired location. A more powerful strategy is to list the desired location adjacent to your current address on your resume. For example, you might state Moving to Tampa, Florida in June or Desired work location Portland, Oregon. In some cases, you may be able to use a local address, such as a family member or friends house. Keep in mind that the employer may expect you to be available on short notice for an interview. Be Prepared to Interview Youll need to have a plan in place when youre contacted to interview. Figure out how youre going to be able to get to the interview location in a timely manner. That might mean an expensive plane ticket unless y ou can find a last-minute bargain. In addition, youll need to figure out how to take time off from your current job. Depending on the level of the job, the company may or may not offer topay some or all of your travel expenses. Use Your Personal Network If youre networking your way into an organization, you might enlist the support of your internal contacts to convey to decision makers the message that youre relocating to the area. In addition, your personal network is also a good source of advice on making the move when it actually happens. Youll be able to find out about housing, schools, and other factors involved in relocating. Consider Making the Move in Advance Another option is to move to the area where youd like to work before you have an actual job lined up. That may seem a little scary, but its possible with some forethought. For exampling, finding temporary work or taking on some gigs to pay the bills while youre seeking a permanent position is a way to generate i ncome. But, you need to keep in mind all the various expenses involved with a big move before you pack your bags. Be Sure to Consider All Your Expenses Its a good idea to calculate your expenses prior to making your move. The Differences Between Underemployment and Unemployment

The Differences Between Underemployment and UnemploymentThe Differences Between Underemployment and UnemploymentWhat does it mean to be underemployed? Underemployment refers to people who are working in a lower capacity than they are qualified for, including in a lower-paid job or for fewer hours than they would like to work. Its different from unemployment in that the person is in fact, working, just not as much as theyd like or to the full extent of their abilities, skills, or education. The term is also a measure of labor utilization when underemployment is high, the workforce isnt being utilized to its full potential. High underemployment can affect the economy similarly to high unemployment, raising poverty levels and depressing spending. As a worker, underemployment can affect you even if youre not currently working less than youd like. When you try to change jobs, you might find yourself competing with underemployed (as well as unemployed) individuals for the same opportunitie s. That also means that you have less bargaining power when it comes time to negotiate salary. Underemployment Definition A worker may be considered underemployed if they hold a part-time job instead of a full-time one, or if they are overqualified and have education, experience, and skills that exceed the requirements of the job. Unemployment vs. Underemployment Unlike unemployment, where a person is actively seeking a job and cannot find work, underemployment describes a situation where a person is working, regardless of the number of hours or the skill level. However, unemployment and underemployment are closing related, as the latter often occurs on account of the former. Mounting bills, expenses, and responsibilities require people to take any job they can get, even if it is not in line with their respective skill set or career interest. The Bureau of Labor Statistics considers these folks involuntary part-time workers because they would like to work a full-time, salari ed position but can only find temporary or part-time work. A person is considered underemployed when they are working at a job for which they are over-qualified, working part-time when they would prefer full-time work, or working at a low-wage job when they could, if jobs were available, be working mora hours. Reasons for Being Underemployed Lack of SkillsUnderemployment often illustrates the employment of workers with skilled backgrounds in low-wage or hourly jobs that do not require such prerequisites. Recent graduates or workers who have immigrated and are reestablishing their careers in a new country might suffer from this under-utilization of skills, but underemployment can happen to anyone seeking work. Lack of ExperienceRecent graduates may find themselves underemployed while looking for their first job after college. Even entry-level jobs sometimes require more experience than students may have to offer right after graduation. Job seekers who find themselves in this posi tion might have to take part-time work while doing additional internships, taking classes, or networking their way to a new position. Credentials Arent Acceptable In many cases, highly skilled individuals come to work in a new country, but face underemployment because their foreign credentials are not be accepted nor considered to be an equivalent fit for the position in question. Few employers are willing to send foreign documents for evaluation by a third party, so many professional individuals such as doctors, lawyers, or engineers take necessary jobs that would otherwise be seen as inferior positions. Discrimination IssuesIn addition to students, foreign nationals, and trade workers, those with disabilities, mental illnesses, or former inmates are often discriminated against and are forced to take the first job made available to them for fear of not finding another. Low DemandSome individuals with acceptable experience and skills are underemployed because of low demand in their local job market. For example, an Oceanographer who is living in Wisconsin might have to take a part-time job until they are able to move to a drehort that can better accommodate their skill set. Poor EconomyIn addition, anyone can find themselves underemployed if the economy takes a turn for the worse. During a recession, many skilled workers who would ordinarily have little trouble landing a good job in their field may wind up underemployed. Market ChangesUnderemployment can also be caused by larger market changes. For example, automation has affected workers in industries ranging from retail to manufacturing to transportation and warehousing. While we tend to talk about these changes in the context of increased unemployment, underemployment is also a problem, as employers cut hours and workers lose bargaining power in the market.

How Knowing Your Aptitude Can Help You Choose a Career

How Knowing Your Aptitude Can Help You Choose a Career How Knowing Your Aptitude Can Help You Choose a Career When you are researching occupations, you will often see something about aptitude listed among the requirements. For example, you may read that in order to work in a particular field you need to have an aptitude for science. Other occupations require having an aptitude for math, visual arts, or performing arts; verbal or spatial abilities; or manual dexterity or motor coordination. But what exactly is an aptitude? When a career description lists an aptitude among the qualifications one needs in order to work in an occupation, it is referring to a natural talent or an ability an individual has acquired through life experience, study, or training. The word may also pertain to ones capacity to acquire a skill. Assessing Aptitude Assessing aptitude can help with career guidance. A career development professional who is helping a client choose a career may administer a multi of multi-aptitude tests career development professionals use with their clients are the DAT (Differential Aptitude Test) and the GATB (General Aptitude Test Battery). Another is the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery), which the United States Military administers to students who are enlisting. They use the results to classify enlistees for training opportunities. Aptitude tests may also look for the presence of abilities that are specific to a particular occupation or area of study. Some college programs use these instruments to assess applicants to certain academic programs, and employers use them to evaluate job candidates. For example, many pharmacy schools use the PCAT (Pharmacy College Admission Test) to look for abilities, aptitudes, and skills that pharmacy schools have deemed essential for success in basic pharmacy curricula (Mental Measurements Yearbook With Tests in Print). The Electrical Aptitude Test is another test that looks for a specific aptitude. It is administered to applicants for jobs that require the ability to learn electrical skills (Mental Measurements Yearbook With Tests in Print). Some Important Things to Know It is worth repeating that you should not use aptitude alone as the criteria for choosing a career. You should also learn about your interests, personality type, and work-related values by doing a thorough self-assessment, and consider that information along with aptitude when choosing a career. Here are a few other things of which you should be aware: While having a particular aptitude may indicate you might succeed in an occupation, it doesnt mean you will do well in every job within it. Required abilities may vary from one job to another, even in the same occupation.A number of occupations may require the same aptitude, so you shouldnt feel like you are only qualified to do one thing. In reality, there may be several suitable occupations for you.Just because you are good at something, it doesnt mean you will like doing it. For example, having an aptitude for math doesnt necessarily mean a career using your mathematical ability should be in your future. Do what youre good at, but only if you like it. Self-Improvement Tips to Avoid an Impending Career Derailment

Self-Improvement Tips to Avoid an Impending Career Derailment Self-Improvement Tips to Avoid an Impending Career Derailment One of the most important means of attaining immediate performance improvement is to seek instant feedback. Receiving constructive criticism is more than about simply accepting your faults but about taking incremental steps over the long-term to identify problem areas and consciously work to improve your performance. But useful feedback doesn̢۪t always come from outside observers. Becoming an internal observer of your own behavior can help you take stock of your reactions to your work and understand what matters most to you. The higher your level of self-awareness, the more you know about yourself and what you can offer your company at a given juncture. To stay relevant to your company, you have to remain aligned with it as its culture changes over time. To that end, you must first understand the organizational culture by analyzing the decision-making processes and axioms on which the organization relies when addressing challenges and capitalizing on opportunities. To do this you must learn to be an active listener, meaning always asking questions to make sure you understand what is happening around you and concentrating on single conversations and moments so that you can remember the key information being shared. Part of being a vital component of your organization is participating in the regular goings-on of the workplace. That means you can̢۪t allow yourself to become too much of a loner and need to remain open with your thoughts and contributions to the decision-making process. The more influential and effective you become, the more facts and feelings you regularly share, the more vital you become to maintaining a successful status quo. Keeping an eye on your organizations future needs and working to align your own development to meet those needs is great, but you can̢۪t sacrifice your current work for what may be expected of you in the future. Employees are valued for the work they get done now, so stay focused on what needs to get done each day and close out tasks as they arise. Having a main job that is always current lets you better assess the shape of things to come. Finally, stay out of a mental rut by learning from your mistakes and refusing to dwell on the past. If the environment has changed, it needs to be addressed on a new footing and with new ideas and solutions, provide them. Expose yourself to new routines so that you become more adaptable to a changing environment. Not only will you create opportunities to develop new relationships, your flexibility and adaptability will be appreciated by your co-workers and, in turn, create a more effective team.

Using Trains to Send Power to the Grid

Using Trains to Send Power to the Grid Using Trains to Send Power to the Grid Using Trains to Send Power to the Grid Fueled by state mandates to grow the use of renewable energy, solar and wind-powered systems are claiming ever-increasing shares of power production. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports renewable sources now generate 13 percent of the nations power, with wind and solar providing 40 percent of that total. But the intermittent nature of wind and solar production is a problem. That energy must be stored somewhere until demand is high enough for it be fed into the electric grid. Engineers and researchers are looking mostly to batteries for that task, but scaling them up to handle megawatts of power remains elusive and costly. Now, in the southwestern U.S., a California startup is turning to an old but improved standby technology to feed the grid on as as-needed basis. Advanced Energy Rail Storage (ARES) is betting on trains to fill the void. It has developed a mechanical system patterned after pumped-storage hydroelectric projects, which continue to be the most efficient system to provide peaking power. But those projects require lots of land as well as water. Permitting is complex and can take years. ARES points to the simplicity of its system and lower costs as an alternative. Instead of pumping water to an upper reservoir and releasing it back to the lower reservoir, ARES runs trains of ore carriers loaded to 120 tons up a grade when electric demand is low, and then brings them back down when demand is high. Inductive motors fitted to the wheels provide power for the uphill run, and then generate electricity on the downhill run. The system has the same regenerative braking principals as electric cars such as the Toyota Prius or Chevy Bolt. ARES energy storage technology employs a fleet of electric traction drive shuttle-trains. Image: ARES Were just using gravity, not water, says Francesca Cava, ARES vice president of operations. Its relatively simple, and thats the genius in it really. ARES has filed patents, designed and successfully operated a pilot project in Tehachape, CA. Now, it is building a 50-MW project in Nevada with Valley Electric Association. The utility will provide the interconnection to California, where ARES will sell the ancillary service power. ARES is funding the $55-million project inhouse, mostly through private investment, says Cava. ARES will provide the power through seven trains operating on a 5.5-mile-long track built on an 8-degree grade, gaining about 2,000 feet in elevation. Each train will have two locomotives and seven unpowered rail cars. Each locomotive is weighted to achieve a 38-ton axle loading, says Cava, and the 120-ton cars are loaded with rocks, which operate at a 30-ton axle loading. The locomotives are powered by remanufactured EMD SD-40 bogies converted from DC traction drive to AC traction drive. There is one motor generator per axle, three axles per bogie and two bogies per locomotive hence six powered axles per locomotive and 12 powered axles per train, she says. The motors reverse to operate as generators on the downhill run. Power is provided to the system via a 25kV overhead catenary system. ARES Nevada vehicles will have an engineered complete Wire to Wheel drive package that will include new high-efficiency dual three-level active inverter/traction control units, Cava adds. Power generating ARES shuttles. Image: ARES ARES executives see the responsiveness of the system and its low environmental footprint as two large advantages. It can go from full discharge to full charge in 10 seconds in response to the grid operator, which sends signals every four seconds to balance supply and demand. Maximum speed is 20 mph, and Cava says the seven trains can respond to the grids signals, moving up and down the track in small increments as determined by the need. Although a 50-MW system is considered large for a battery-storage project, Cava says the Nevada project is at the shorter end of its economic scale; bigger is better. Its economics are improved by increasing the scale. ARES executives say they could double capacity of a 500-MW system and increase capital costs by only 20% ARES Nevada costs are estimated at $4,400 per kWh storage with capital costs of $1,100 per kW. An analysis by Deloitte reports the cost of lithium ion batteries at $1,000 to $2,000 per kW; compressed air storage systems at $1,600 to $2,200 per kW; pumped hydro storage at $1,200 to $2,100 per kW; and flywheel storage at $2,100 to $2,600 per kW. The market is huge, says Cava. California alone has a mandate to add 1.3 GW of storage by 2020. If the country goes more and more to renewable energy, if it goes beyond 30 percent, youll need energy storage. For cities or small towns, batteries may be the answer. But in the West, were not the only alternative but we are the cheapest. While the Tehachapi tests showed the system operates best on grades of six percent to eight percent, ARES is already developing plans to adapt the system to steeper grades. Cava says the next demonstration could use a cog railroad. We could operate at a steeper grade over a shorter length, she says, which would open the system up to more terrain. We see the future as fairly soon. Learn more about the latest energy technologies atASMEs Power and Energy. For Further Discussion We̢۪re using gravity, not water. It̢۪s relatively simple really, and that̢۪s the genius in it. Francesca Cava, ARES

An Artificial Heart to Beat

An Artificial Heart to Beat An Artificial Heart to Beat An Artificial Heart to Beat Two pioneers in the quest for the holy grail of cardiovascular engineering a practical, permanent artificial heart are pumped about a new prototype heart now in preclinical testing. The experimental device, if successful, could be the first artificial heart sufficiently compact, durable, biocompatible, and inexpensive enough to serve as a permanent replacement for failing hearts. The prototype is the latest creation of Richard Wampler, M.D., the brains behind groundbreaking blood pumps used in the ventricular assist devices (VADs) currently used to boost heart function. Wampler is the resident innovator at OregonHeart, a spin-off of Oregon Health Science University (OHSU), Portland, OR, where he also holds a faculty position. Decades after completing a surgical residency at OHSU, the physician-engineer reconnected with a former mentor there, Albert Starr, M.D., who serves as a medical advisor to OHSU-owned OregonHeart. In the 1960s, Starr co-invented and successfully implanted the worlds first successful artificial human heart valve. With inspiration from these long-time leaders, the engineers of OregonHeart are working to adapt Wamplers patented shuttling pump design into a practical, versatile, and most of all permanent total artificial heart system (TAHS). Wamplers concept would effectively enable one relatively small and lightweight pump to do the work of the two larger pumps current artificial hearts use to control circulation of blood between the heart, the lungs, and the rest of the body. The reduction in bulk and complexity would mean artificial hearts could be used in more types of patients with a wider range of conditions. The prototype is now in proof-of-concept testing in animals, and the company hopes to begin testing it in human patients within 10 years. Anatomical connections. Image: Oregon Health Science University. Different by Design A total artificial heart is not a new idea. Engineers and physicians have been pursuing the idea in earnest since the 1940s, creating critical technologies like the heart-lung machine and the artificial heart valve along the way. In 1982, the Robert Jarvik-designed Jarvik 7 artificial heart was implanted in patient Barney Clark, who survived for nearly four months. Since then, artificial hearts have primarily been used for humanitarian purposes for the most severely ill patients or as a temporary treatment to keep a patient alive until a donor heart is found. Devices for long-term partial heart support such as pacemakers and left- or right-ventricular assist devices (LVADs and RVADs) are used as a bridge to transplantation. The most widely used artificial heart system today is the SynCardia TAH-t temporary artificial heart from SynCardia Systems, Tucson, AZ, which has been implanted in more than 500 patients since 2012. The SynCardia device uses two separate positive displacement pumps to replace the patients right and left ventricles, with two valves on each pump maintaining the unidirectional flow of blood. Wamplers design takes a different approach: it incorporates a rotary pump such as those commonly used in LVADs, which work with the patients heart to boost the function of the left ventricle. With a track record for safety and durability, rotary blood pumps offer several advantages as a platform for a total artificial heart system. Wampler demonstrated these advantages in a landmark 1988 invention, the Hemopump, a device about the size of a pencil eraser that could be placed in the patients heart with a catheter in a 20-minute procedure. The Hemopump led to his co-development of todays most widely used rotary LVAD system, the HeartMate II by Thoratec, Pleasanton, CA,a device used most famously to keep former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney alive during his 20-month wait for a heart transplant. His current vision is to adapt the rotary pump approach in a smaller, simpler TAH system without the need for artificial valves, venting or volume compensation. The prototype is intended to be implanted after the patients native heart has been removed. The pump housings four inflow/outflow ports are surgically connected with atrial cuffs and prosthetic arterial grafts to the patients left atrium, aorta, right atrium, and pulmonary artery. When in place, the heart produces blood circulation by means of a single rotary impeller mounted on a hollow shaft surrounded by electrical coils. These coils interact with motor rotor drivers within the shaft walls to produce both rotary and axial motion. As the impeller rotates it also shuttles along the shaft between the four arterial connectors in sequence, alternately drawing in or pumping out blood as required to create both pulmonary and systemic circulation. Flow and pressure measurements control the rotors duty cycle and dwell time to balance the flow between the two sides. This axial shuttling movement essentially enables a single blood pump to perform the work of two, eliminating much of the bulk and complexity of current two-pump TAH systems. A diagram of the OregonHeart. Image: Oregon Health Science University. Heartwrenching Trends Wampler saystotal artificial heart technology has progressed much more slowly than the pace of advances in LVADS and other devices. But changes in U.S. health trends are lending renewed the urgency of need for an alternative to heart transplants for the long-term treatment of severe heart diseases like congestive heart failure. Heart failure is lethally successful. It kills nearly 300,000 Americans a year and is on the rise as our population ages and obesity rates increase. Heart failure occurs when the heart is no longer able to pump enough blood to meet the bodys normal requirements. It can result from birth defects or from any other form of damage to the heart muscle. Cardiologists base treatments on the underlying cause as well as the patients age and overall physical condition. A half century of advances in biomedical engineering have led to a range of treatments for heart failure, from medication to VADS to transplantation. For patients with severe bi-ventricular end-stage heart failure, a transplant is the treatment of last resort but there are never enough suitable hearts to meet the growing need. About 4,000 patients are currently on the United Network for Organ Sharings transplant waiting list, yet only about 2,000 donor hearts become available in a typical year. The perpetual scarcity of organs in the face of a growing demand adds urgency to the effort to develop a total, practical, and permanent artificial heart as an alternative destination therapy, said the companys CEO Clyde Taylor. This technology could be quite significant, especially with whats gone on with the population and the negative trajectory on heart health. Michael MacRae is an independent writer. How to tell a recruiter why you left your last position

How to tell a recruiter why you left your last position How to tell a recruiter why you left your last position It’s almost impossible to make it through a job interview without being asked why you left your last position.Just don’t stop in your tracks when it happens to you - here’s how to handle the situation the right way, instead of visibly clamming up.Don’t go in cold - do some trial runsAlison Doyle, a career expert, author, CEO and founder of CareerToolBelt.com, writes in The Balance about how you should “practice” before telling a recruiter why you quit a position.“Practice your responses so you come across as positive and clear. Practicing (especially in front of a mirror) will help you feel more comfortable answering this difficult question. This is particularly true if you were laid off or fired. In a situation like that, give a short, clear, and unemotional response,” she writes.Once you make it to the interview, this can only work in your favor. What to say if you were let goAlison Green, author of the Ask a Manager blog, writes what to say when this is the case i n a piece for The Cut. After explaining why you shouldn’t lie about it, and how you shouldn’t “overexplain” what happened,  she includes a few sample responses. This one  demonstrates how to show what you learned from the situation:“Actually, I was let go. The workload was very high and I didn’t speak up soon enough and ended up making mistakes because of the volume. It taught me a lesson about communicating early when the workload is that high, and to make sure I’m on the same page as my manager about how to prioritize.”What to say if you left because of your managerKeep things general, not specific - doing the latter will likely come back to bite you.Lily Zhang, Manager of Graduate Student Professional Development at the MIT Media Lab, writes in The Muse about what to say when your terrible manager was the reason why you quit. Here’s her sample answer for a recruiter:“I realized the leadership of my team was going in a different direction, and I’m interested in working in a more collaborative environment. It was a hard decision to make because I love the mission of the company, but I ultimately think this is the right choice.”Each of these tips should come in handy when you leave one job for another - just as long as you left your previous position on good terms, of course.

New study Millennials earning more at their age than past generations

New study Millennials earning more at their age than past generations New study Millennials earning more at their age than past generations Millennials may be in debt â€" but they’re making more than ever before.Millennial-headed households â€" meaning young people aged 22 to 37 â€" now earn more than young adult households have at almost any other time in the last 50 years, according to Pew Research Center’s analysis of new census data. (An exception was a low point for earnings overall in 2011.)In 2017, the median adjusted income in a household headed by a Millennial was $69,000, higher than almost any other year on record. (In 2000, households headed by people ages 22-27 earned about $67,6000, adjusted for inflation). (Not quite the amount they need to “feel happy,” but getting there). One reason for the increase is that Millennial women are leading the charge â€" young women are working more and being compensated better than in previous years. In 2017, women in Millennial households worked more than those in 2000. Amongst those Millennial women who did work in 2017, 78% of them worked at least 50 weeks out of the year.Young adult women are also being paid slightly more: women working full time for an entire year found their median earnings rising from $37,100 to 2000 to $39,000 in 2017.But it’s not all good newsStill, while Millennial households may have been found to be out-earning their past selves, they’re still behind what Boomers were making at their age, the Federal Reserve has found.According to the paper, “the real average full-time labor earnings of a Millennial male household head in 2014 were … over 10% lower than those for a comparable male Baby Boomer household head in 1978.”And they still hadn’t caught up by 2016: In that year, the “average real net worth of Millennial households was about $92,000, around 20% less than Baby Boomer households in 1989 and nearly 40% less than Generation X households in 2001,” according to the paper. Contradictory to the Pew Research analysis, this suggested lower earnings; it also took into account an unprecedented amount of d ebt, including student loans.

Clinical Practice Veterinary Technician

Clinical Practice Veterinary Technician Clinical Practice Veterinary Technician Clinical practice veterinary technicians have special training and certification to assist veterinarians as they work on specific species in a clinical setting. Veterinary technician specialists in clinical practice provide skilled care in one of three specialty areas of practice: canine and feline, exotic companion animal, or production animal. Routine tasks for a clinical practice vet tech may include a variety of tasks related to skilled nursing, veterinary case management, and therapy protocols. Additional duties may include administering fluids, post-operative care, assisting vets with exams, and maintaining medical equipment. Veterinary technicians, including those in clinical practice, are often required to work schedules that may include some nights, weekends, or holidays. A technician’s hours are designed to mirror those of the veterinarians that they are attending, and some vets may work “on call” or at 24-hour emergency facilities. Career Options Clinical practice vet techs usually work in a veterinary clinic or hospital, but they may also find positions with other organizations such as zoos, aquariums, and research laboratories. They specialize by working with a specific category of patients (dogs and cats, exotic companion animals, or production animals). Some veterinary technicians also choose to transition into other positions in the animal health industry, such as veterinary pharmaceutical sales. Education Licensing There are currently more than 160 accredited veterinary technician programs in the United States. These institutions offer two year Associate degrees. After completing an accredited program, a vet tech must pass a licensing examination in their state of residence before being approved to practice their profession. State certification is granted through the National Veterinary Technician (NVT) certification exam, though some states may have additional requirements for licensing. The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) is the certifying body for the 11 veterinary technician specialist (VTS) certification paths. The currently recognized specialties for veterinary technicians include anesthesia, nutrition, surgical, behavior, dental, zoo, internal medicine, emergency critical care, equine, clinical pathology, and clinical practice. The Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Clinical Practice (AVTCP) oversees the VTS specialty certification process. It offers certification to licensed vet techs that have completed at least 10,000 hours (5 years) of vet tech experience.  At least 75 percent of that time must have involved work in the field of clinical practice.  Additional educational prerequisites include completing at least 50 case logs, submitting four detailed case reports (focused on nursing care, therapy plans, and management), and documenting at least 40 hours of advanced continuing education. Veterinary technicians that meet the prerequisites for skills and experience are eligible to take the AVTCP certification exam at the symposium each fall. Salary The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a mean annual wage of $3,290 ($14.56 per hour) for the category of veterinary technicians during the most recent salary survey of 2012. The lowest 10 percent of all techs earned a salary of less than $21,030 per year, while the highest 10 percent of all techs earned a salary of more than $44,030 per year. Benefits received by vet techs may include compensation in the form of salary, medical and dental insurance, paid vacation, a uniform allowance, and discounted care for the tech’s personal pets at the clinic. As is to be expected with any position, salary is based on the tech’s level of experience and education. Specialists usually can command top dollar as a result of their expertise in the field. Career Outlook According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 84,800 veterinary technicians employed in the United States during the 2012 salary survey. The BLS study projected that the profession would grow at a rate of about 30 percent, much faster than the average for all positions.  Approximately 4,000 new technicians enter the field each year. The limited number of new veterinary technicians is not expected to meet the strong demand from veterinary employers. An even smaller number of veterinary technicians are able to become certified in a specialty. This limited supply should translate to strong demand for vet tech specialists in clinical practice and other specialty areas.

What Everyone Is Saying About Sales Associate Resume Description Is Wrong and Why

What Everyone Is Saying About Sales Associate Resume Description Is Wrong and Why The Hidden Gem of Sales Associate Resume Description A proven capacity to achieve sales targets is crucial to every Sales Associate. The work of an agricultural sales representative is extremely like that of different sales representatives. Make your points, outlining why you feel you are excellent for the sales associate role. There's no doubt that the most prosperous sales associates can make gross incomes in the six-figure selection and beyond. The Sales Associate needs an excellent customer data base as a way to grow more sales for the organization. In some cases, a sales associate resume will also should include cold calling and client service duties too. Your sales associate resume needs to appear professional if you would like to have your credentials stick out in a crowded field. Retail sales associates work very closely with customers, that is the big reason they have to be in a position to resolve the clients' complaints satisfactorily. Retail Sales Associates play a significant role in retail establishments since they increase customer satisfaction and generate increased company revenues by helping clients purchase solutions. The enormous retail company should employ motivated workers on a standard basis to give customer service and serve as managers. Banking industry is just one of the examples here. Because the retail business is transactional nature, it is easy to include things like numerical quantification to project competence. Common regular requirements include education and skilled experience. A fundamental comprehension of Microsoft programs including Excel, Access, and Outlook would probably be useful, together with experience with other inventory-specific software programs.
